This is a great list. I think I would probably add one more:
“If you pray more, your depression will go away.” Any more favorite worst things to say to someone who is depressed?

That was a fun list.
I’ve been guilty of this one: “How about I cook you a good meal. That will make things better.†I tend to think that TLC and comfort food should help! 🙂
I thought the “Have you tried acupuncture” was hilarious.
The easy quip I do not like that was not on the list is: “God will not give you more than you can bear.” That saying seems to ignore the context and that the verse is talking about temptation.
The best thing people have offered is: “I am praying for you” and a hug.

Oh there are oh so many to share.
As the previous spouse said
“What the flying F is wrong with you. You have XYZ nice house,
stay home with chidlren could it cross your mind to open your lips
to smile on on occasion?
He left me for someone more “happy” after 10 years.
It was true. The worst I felt was when I had all these nice blessings
and could simply not enjoy them.
When I grew up in the “low income ghetto” surrounded by everyone
the ole CM, drug dealers, welfare people , in walls papere thing I
actually felt better. No one asked why you look so unhappy for
it’s simply obvious.
I also enjoy hearing “you need a kick in the bleep to get you going”.
Can you imagine if you said that to your diabetic friend who downed
yet another donut, sugar candy etc, telling you he’ll just adjust
his insulint, you need a kick in the A__ to keep your will power.
The overweight friend who has diabetes, had their second quadruple
bypass, and high blood pressure; you need a kick in the A– to
keep your mouth off those foods you are not suppose to eat,
and get exercising and losing weight.
How about the friend with Cancer that struggles, one that they say will
live if they get through the leukemia chemotherapy and steroids
that add pounds to your frame and cuase mood swings.
Oh hey, just have a positive attitude and “chin up” you will be FINE.
The worst I hear was to a friend with PTSS from the war. He was
deemed disabled he had been tortured , witnessed killing, starvation
etc and his lovely line of encouragement was from a friend
Good GOD what is WRong wiTH YOU, many are DEAD and this is the way
you Thank God with your life? To sit around unable to work or function.’
That man eventually comitted suicide.
So we are not alone in stupid remarks by any means.

Oh thank you for this list. I had been in a long depression (7ish years hard to know when it really started). I just heard todd friel unintentionally insulting anyone who was depressed with his flippancy the other day… I was appalled.
“so you’ve lost all your desires, so what it isn’t as bad as…”
and then goes on to describe, self deprecatingly, how wimpy he had been about his bout with a bad cold.
One recent show he started by quoting mideval theory about depression being ‘accedia’ or “sloth” and how the solution was ‘just get up and do more.’
yeah, real helpful.
