How Quickly Things Change

I’m often amazed at how quickly things can change, for either better or worse. I remember a month ago or so I was seriously sick with the flu bug that has been EVERYWHERE this year. I had been sick for about two weeks. As I was complaining to a friend of my, I said, “This is the worst winter I’ve ever had!”

“Really?,” he said. “You’ve had a pretty bad couple of years here.”

It kind of set me back. I have had a few pretty wretched winters. We’re coming up upon Good Friday here soon. I can remember a couple years ago when things were about as dark as they could be, that I seriously contemplated suicide. Now that is a bad winter.

Things are going well for me. They really are. The problems that I have are blissfully normal. Sick. Kids. Pastoral stuff. Life. It’s good. I’m glad for it. But I never want to forget what it took to get here.

  1. The memories of the wretched times must be receding to a remote part of your mind…..don’t be set back by being reminded of them……be grateful for having moved on. You’re right in that its good to not forget where you’ve been, though.

Two springs ago was wretched for me. I became convinced my mother, my husband, my children, my good friends…..were all conspiring to kill me. I laugh inwardly to think of those thoughts now, but I was in a pathetic state back then, my thinking processes completely mixed up. I would have driven over a cliff if not for someone snatching the car keys away from me.

Whenever I hear of someone doing some bizarre thing…..and people shaking their heads and saying, “How could a person do that?”…..believe me, I understand the mindset of being convinced that you must do some action that others will see as completely bizarre. I pity the doers of the bizarre deeds and the families dealing with them.

Glad to know you’re doing OK.
