  1. I think that prayer, sunshine and exercise are really good – (very difficult for me!) but good. Waiting is also difficult, but there isn’t much choice.

    I also find that reducing carbs somewhat helps me (I want lots of ‘comfort food’ but it seems to increase my sluggish feelings.)

    And also (what else from the DesignatedKnitter???) I find that knitting is helpful. It is a rhythmic, repetetive action which takes enough concentration to “slow my mind” when I can’t seem to do so any other way. I know it’s not always distracting enough for some people, but the combo of watching baseball or other TV and knitting has been very helpful for me. Also, it is productive, so it helps boost my sense of accomplishment.

  3. Sometimes, simple tasks that require work but not a lot of decision-making, can help. Cleaning the shelves in the refrigerator, for example, can give you a feeling of accomplishment with minimal effort or worry. (If you discover some science project growing in the back of the fridge and decide to toss it out, go ahead.)

When I was in the mental hospital we spent a lot of time in group talking about this, although “distract yourself with mindless entertainment” covers a lot of it. 🙂 There’s also taking a relaxing bath, although that might appeal more to women than men. And although it sounds odd, getting out on a regular basis can help me instead of hibernating at home. I think that was part of the reason I deteriorated so badly last winter was because the weather got bad and I was not getting out at all. Even church was canceled.
