Prozac a fake?

The big news today is about Prozac. The granddaddy of modern anti-depressants, Prozac has been around in some form or another since 1972. But today a study was released claiming that Prozac is no more effective than a placebo.

I’m sure this will provide lots of ammunition for everyone that thinks drugs are basically evil. Personally, I recognize the two edged sword which is drugs. At the same time, though, amongst pastors it is WAY more likely to be under-medicated or not medicated at all than to be overmedicated.

So I don’t find this announcement as good news at all. I think it will contribute to a lot of people not getting the help they need, whether it be medical or alternative.

Bummer.

  1. I know of someone who killed his family and himself during a time when his probably clueless doctor was trying to change his psychiatric drugs around….. take him off prozac and onto something else. Do I consider this patient responsible for his actions? NO. More likely it was the doctor.

  3. I guess my perspective is a bit different then yours. To me the new study shows how quickly people will turn to meds and how doctors are just as fast to comply when all a lot of them needed was time and a sounding board instead of taking a gamble on a chemical enhancement. Antidepressants don’t make people happy but what they can do for people who actually need them is to make life a bit easier so they can get the real work done on a therapist’s couch. Take care

  5. I’m not in any way an expert. I have taken anti-depressants at two different times in my life. I am not sure that I was clinically depressed either time. This would be the key to me in any study on the benefits of anti-depressants. If you are not clinically/chemically depressed, what is the point? Busy doctors see you break down in their office and immediately get out the prescription pad. Even a good, well-intentioned doctor can do this. Clinical depression cannot be diagnosed this easily. Thanks for this site. Blessings this Easter – THE day of life.
